Every October a fleet slips out of Valletta's harbour and doesn't stop for the best part of a week, chasing the wind counter-clockwise around Sicily — past Etna's smoke, through the narrow strait at Messina, north toward Stromboli's glow, then south again by Pantelleria and Lampedusa before turning for home. Some crews are back within two days, others take six, all of them sailing into the same harbour they left. Run every autumn since 1968, it's one of the Mediterranean's toughest tests of nerve and endurance.
